jazak,allah
i dont eat with my left hand, thought i should clear that before i continue, but i keep getting asked "why not eat with your left hand?", and i dunno the answer...
so, was their a reason given why not to eat with your left hand and why is it considered arrogent to eat with your left hand?
does this apply to touching the food with your left hand only or does it also mean you can't use a spoon/fork with your left hand? before anyone says you should eat with your hands, its not always possible with certain types of foods to eat without a spoon/fork, for example, soup, beans etc.

I think I read somewhere that Shaytaan eats and drinks with his left hand...logically it's wrong to because you use your left hand to wash yourself after reliving yourself.

is it wrong to use a knife with your left hand, im sure they use a knife to halaal the meat using their right hand. what happens when you have meat on your plate and its too stiff so you need to break it either with both hands or with a knife and fork. is it better to touch the food with your left and right hand or is it better to hold a knife in your left hand and a fork in the right hand to stop it sliding?

What if you have your tea in your right hand and are drinking it and have your biscuit in the left?
Would it actually be wrong/sinful to eat the biccie using the left? Or just mukruh or what?

Narated By 'Umar bin Abi Salama : I was a boy under the care of Allah's Apostle and my hand used to go around the dish while I was eating. So Allah's Apostle said to me, 'O boy! Mention the Name of Allah and eat with your right hand, and eat of the dish what is nearer to you." Since then I have applied those instructions when eating.

kind of trying to find out that too :D but i;ve seen people put the cup down, then use their right hand to pick up a biscuit, eat it, then lift the cup again with their right hand.

Yes you can use both your hands to break your food, there's never been any prohibition of that.

how about holding the cup in your left hand, and the biscuit in your right hand? can you then sip your tea with the cup in the left hand?

Allah knows best, but there's a difference between NOT eating with the left hand and not actually touching/handling food with the left hand. I've never come across anything which says you can't handle food with the left hand, as opposed to eating with it. In any event, here's some info on eating with the right hand.
He (the Prophet) commanded people to eat with their right hands and forbade them to eat with their left hands. He said, “The Shaytaan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.” Narrated by Muslim (2020). This implies that eating with the left hand is haraam, and this is the correct view, because the one who eats with his left hand is either a shaytaan (a devil), or he is imitating the Shaytaan.
It was also reported in a saheeh hadeeth that he told a man who was eating with his left hand in his presence, “Eat with your right hand!” The man said, “I cannot.” He said, “May you never be able to!” – and the man never lifted his right hand to his mouth after that. Narrated by Muslim (2021). If it was permissible (to eat with the left hand), he would not have prayed against him for doing so. It was the man’s stubborn arrogance that made him refuse to obey the command, and this is the utmost disobedience which deserved this prayer against him.

Moreover, the left hand should be reserved for removing dirt, as when cleaning oneself after going to the toilet (istinja’) and blowing one’s nose and other kinds of cleaning oneself and removing dirt. How can a person use that which is used for removing dirt and impurities for putting food in his mouth?
Hafsah (may Allaah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to use his right hand for eating, drinking and getting dressed and his left hand for everything else. (Reported by Abu Dawood, no. 30)
Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
“This is a fixed rule in sharee’ah. It has to do with honourable things such as putting on one’s shirt, trousers and shoes, entering the mosque, using siwaak, applying kohl, … combing and styling one’s hair, … shaving the head, giving salaam at the end of prayer, washing oneself in ghusl or wudoo’, leaving the toilet, eating, drinking, shaking hands, acknowledging the Black Stone, and other things where we are encouraged to use the right hand or start with the right. As for the opposite [things that are not honourable], such as entering the toilet, leaving the mosque, blowing one’s nose, washing oneself after using the toilet, taking off one's shirt, trousers and shoes, and so on, then we should start with the left or use the left hand. All of this has to do with honouring the right hand or right side.”

i know its wrong, but why?
what do you do with your left hand :smack:
ok so, is it safe to say that:
food must only enter your mouth using your right hand, even if you are using a fork/spoon/cup, but you can touch your food (for the purpose of breaking stiff meat for example) with both hands, even though you use your left hand for cleaning your privates?
sounds a bit dodgy...
what do you do with your left hand :smack:
i know, but does that not mean you should not touch food with your left hand at all?
The Companion Jabir (God be pleased with him) said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: ‘Do not eat with your left hand, because Satan eats and drinks with his left hand.’” (Reported by Muslim.)
Having the habit of eating with one's left hand
Question:
Because of my nephews bad habit he has great difficulty in eating with his right hand. At the moment he uses his left hand when there is nobody to remind him. I am worried about this, so, what is the fiqh ruling concerning a person who get used to eat with his left hand?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
Doing good is a habit and doing evil is a habit. Man is always either making progress or falling behind. When a person gets used to doing something, he becomes very fond of it and loves it, and dislikes anything else. Then he thinks that the thing he is not used to is not possible, but this way of thinking is not right and it goes against both the laws of Islam and the facts of reality. Therefore the one who uses his left hand to eat and drink should be taught the Islamic ruling and should be reminded of the hadeeth of the Prophet http://www.islam-qa.com/images/saws.gif (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on this matter. When a man ate with his left hand in his presence, the Prophet http://www.islam-qa.com/images/saws.gif (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Eat with your right hand.” He said, “I cannot.” He said, “May you never be able to!” Nothing was stopping him but his stubborn arrogance, and he never raised his right hand to his mouth after that. (Reported by Muslim, 3776). According to a report narrated by al-Daarimi, “his right hand never reached his mouth”. This man suffered paralysis because of the du’aa’ of the Prophet http://www.islam-qa.com/images/saws.gif (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “In this hadeeth we have an indication that it is allowed to pray against a person who breaks a shar’i rule with no excuse. We also see the principle of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil in all situations, even with regard to eating. It encourages us to teach proper manners of eating to a person who is eating if he is doing something wrong. The hadeeth also teaches us that the Shaytaan eats with his left hand, because of the hadeeth: “When any one of you eats, let him eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, let him drink with his right hand, because the Shaytaan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.” (Reported by Muslim, 3764). The Shaytaan eats with his left hand so the person who eats with his left hand resembles the Shaytaan, indeed the Shaytaan is sharing his food with him. Ahmad reported with a hasan isnaad from ‘Aa’ishah and attributed to the Prophet http://www.islam-qa.com/images/saws.gif (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Whoever eats with his left hand, the Shaytaan eats with him.” (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, commentary on hadeeth 1721).

Some people may have a real problem that prevents them from using their right hand, such as being paralyzed and so on. In this case they are excused and there is no blame on them. Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “If he has an excuse for not eating and drinking with his right hand, such as sickness or an injury, then this is not makrooh…”
Most likely the problem of the boy you are asking about has to do with habit, so try to get him used to eating with his right hand and keep on advising him and reminding him to do so. You could seek the help of psychiatrists, because some of them may have some useful ideas. We ask Allaah to give you strength, May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

According to different scholars, eating with your lef hand is either wajib or sunnah.
Eating with your hands is also sunnah.
I do think however, that the disgust some people feel about others eating with their left hands is more cultural than anything. Left handed people clean their private parts with their right hand, so there's nothing to worry about that.
Also, nowadays people wash their hands after going to the washroom so there shouldn't also be a problem with that.
Moreover, the prophet said that Satan eats with his left hand. However, most of us now don't eat with our hands, but we eat with utensils, so we're not even doing the same as Satan does.
Finally, there's something that I have always questioned myself. There are many things in which we say "it's sunnah" because the prophet did it. But is it all a recommended sunnah? What I'm saying is that some scholars say that it's better to eat with your hands than with utensils because that's what the prophet did. But what I always think is... what would the prophet do if he were living in this century? Would he eat with his hands or would he use utensils?
The prophet also used to clean his private parts with rocks, would he do that if he were living with us? Or would he use toilet paper?
Just food for thought!

also, it was said that the quran was revealed in the best place, the best time, so everything the prophet did would have been the best, even if it ment eating with your hand.

I'm not a mujtahida as I have said many times, so I usually don't take ahadith and analyze them by myself and do fatwas. I follow the scholars I trust.
Scholars such as Imam al-Ayni (who is the author of one of the most famous commentaries of sahih bukhari) states that eating with your left hand is sunnah. He even goes to the extent of saying that if you don't eat with your left hand not out of disregard for the Sunnah then there's no blame. And then he even lists classical scholars that have agreed with this.
Also who said that the Quran was revealed in the best place and the best time? I never heard of this. And from an historical perspective, Makkah at the time of Mohammad, saws, doesn't seem the best place or the best time for this.
And I agree with you that everything the prophet did was the best for that time, but if he were living in this time, maybe he would have done certain things differently.
And Allah knows best.

And I agree with you that everything the prophet did was the best for that time, but if he were living in this time, maybe he would have done certain things differently.
And Allah knows best.
That is contrary to the Ahlus sunnah, so propagate it elsewhere.
so wen your scholar stated that eating with the left hand is sunnah, did he show any evidence for this from the Prophet SAW? or u dont feel the need to ask for any?
i thought we were supposed to have blind faith in allah only, didn't know we were supposed to have blind faith in scholars too...

That's absolute wish wash, basically what you are saying from that is that, Allah (swt) might change his "mind" if he sent down muhammad (saw) in this day and age, that's absolute ludicrous, Our religion has been perfected for us. Allah (swt) plans, and he doesn't change his "mind" because of what people might deem acceptable today. pfft...

The prophet(pbuh) said "eat". so using the left hand to help with cutting a piece of stif meat is Ok.
Why do you make such a fuss about it?
The more I read about Islam on here the more it gets harder for me to practice it. I think I had enough learning.
Who said you're supposed to have blind faith about Islam (period)? It is encouraged to search for reasons and conclusions, which will make your faith even stronger. Believeing blindy is wrong - you are no better than parrot. Allah gave us our powerful brain for a good reason.
Eating with knives, forks, and spoons aren't haraam or makruh. Now all I'm waiting is for someone to call them a bid'ah.
muslimlearner, you can cut a piece of steak with both hands, but then eat it with the fork in your right hand.
Why is it hard for you? Instead of overloading yourself with the laws of Islam, first learn how to love Allah and His Prophet :saw: then the laws can be put into practice later. That's how it is meant to be. Even Aisha (ra) said that if the Prophet :saw: introduced the laws of Islam first, no one would have listened. Thus take it easy and step by step, be modest in your worship. The most important thing is to be sincere; as long as it is from the heart Allah will reward you even more than 700 times for one good deed. The more sincere, the more reward.
Isn't it pretty obvious that the Sunnah concerns only eating?
How would Muslim women have cooked all these centuries if Muslims were forbidden to touch food with their left hand? (And what would have happened if, God forbid, a woman had only her left hand?)
I'm not Muslim, so please consider my thoughts accordingly.

So are you saying that Imam al-Ayni is not a scholar (and a famous one, BTW) of the Ahlus sunnah??

It's not forbidden to touch food with the left hand, just do not eat with it solely. For example, to eat a banana with the left hand is unlawful but I'm pretty sure eating with both hands is lawful, for example eating a hamburger with both hands.
If she only had one hand, (for example she lost her right hand in battle) then of course it would not be unlawful. Allah is the one who took her right hand away, thus she has no choice but to eat with the other. Allah understands this, His mercy precedes his wrath is something to keep in mind.

The left hand is primarily used for cleaning yourself, especially for cleaning the private parts after using the toilet.
Muslims are required to take food and do other such things with their right hand. They have been ordained to do all the other essential but not much liked acts with their left hand.
This demarcation has been done to highlight the distinctive position of the right hand. It is regrettable indeed that some Muslims nowadays use the left hand for eating. It is a sign that their righteous nature is spoiled and that they have totally ignored the Divine injunctions. May Allah help us observe the Divine orders.
1648. Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Do not touch your private parts with your right hand while urinating, nor for washing or cleaning (your private parts); and do not breathe into the drinking vessel from which you drink.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
So are you saying that Imam al-Ayni is not a scholar (and a famous one, BTW) of the Ahlus sunnah??
ok fairenough, i'll take your word for it that he is famous (i've never heard of him by the way). did he explain why we should not listen to the prophet when the prophet (pbuh) explicitly said not to eat with your left hand?

"The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used his right hand for getting water for ablution and taking food, and his left hand for his evacuation and for anything repugnant."

Finally, someone pointed out. It's a common sense that you need both of your hands to cook; it's not easy othewise. So, you touch the food with left hand as well. As for as I know, nowhere is mentioned not to 'touch' food with your left hand. One must eat and drink with his right hand only as our Prophet Muhammad :saws2: has ordered us.
And those self-claimed scholars who say it's sunnah to eat with left hand, they should fear Allah and stop inventing lies against our Prophet Muhammad :saws2: There're enough sahih hadith to indicate that our Prophet :saws2: forbid eating and drinking with left hand.

thats gonna be a mission if you trying to eat roti, i normally hold roti in my left hand and break bits off with my right hand... time to pull out the knife and fork? :o
You're gonna eat roti with a knife and a fork...lol ? Thats a first. There's nothing wrong with using your left hand as a helper as long as you eat it with your right hand. Besides, it's Sunnah to eat (and drink) with your right hand.
even though, i have seen some people (1 person) eating roti using just the right hand, using just the right hand they can rip it, and make no use of the left hand at all while eating, that is some skill...
Using just your right hand to break and eat the roti is not that hard as it seems to some. I used to use both of my hands but for a while, I've been using my right hand only...makes me feel all grown-up (not that I'm not already).

nah, i got no plans to eat roti with knife and fork and i know what you're saying, someone posted something in this thread where it said do good things by "starting" with the right hand.
i cant do that roti breaking with 1 hand. what is even more amazing is how people eat rice with their three finger tips. now that is amazing...

sis Ceren I am a bit confused, have you put eating with the left hand as sunnah/wajib as a mistake like a typing error?? cos I feel really bewildered by this  if you did mean 2 say one should eat wit the left wat is the evidences ne1 gives for that, regarding that many hadiths we kno rasoolallah :saw: told ppl not to do that, but rather ordered us to do with the right?

thats exactly what i thought, that she typed left by mistake, then i get a little concerned when her second post said exactly the same thing. I even went and checked about the imaam she mentioned and he trully does say to eat with your left hand even though hadith seems to say that eating with the left hand is following the shaitaan...

But insha allah let's wait for sis Ceren to come and explain us what is behind that view

makruh doesn't mean sinful it means if you do it which is makruh then you wont get sin for it but if you don't do it which is makruh you get reward for it.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
It's amazing how everyone just jumped to critisize me instead of maybe thinking that I made a mistake!! I have to thank someone that PMd me to let me know....
If anything, this was a test from Allah swt to see how we can be kind and give our brothers and sisters the benefit of the doubt!
What I meant to say is..... EATING WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND IS EITHER WAJIB OR SUNNAH, depending on the scholars.
I'm sorry for any confusion I might have caused, and I also wish people hadn't mocked me as they did, not because I care, but because we're not supposed to mock each other and we're supposed to treat each other with the best of manners.
OMGGGG !!! I just went back to my second post and realized that I even said that "eating with your left hand is sunnah"... Astaghfirullah!!
Again, I got confused... (english is not my first language, sorry).
Thanks sister Anna for not jumping to conclusions!

I dont think that anyone mocked you intentionally. Alot of people asked questions. InshaAllah don't take it to heart.:)

This is why i think it's quite silly that we can't edit our posts after a certain period of time. Imagine typing something up mistakenly which clearly contradicts Quran and Sunnah, and then not being able to edit it down the track.

I know and all this time I was wondering (astaghfirullah)... what's wrong with these people? Why are they reacting so "violently"... this is very mainstream....
...And I was saying the whole thing backwards!
May Allah forgive me for this mistake.

Yeah if someone says something once then there is a chance that it could be a mistake, but not when it's 2-3-4 times, hence the reason why some people (*ahem* me *Roll Eyes*) replied that way.
A good chance to bring up this verse-
O ye who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin. (Quran 49:12)

I think its basically common sense, we have been blessed with 2 hands as it will be difficult to do most things with one hand, thats why we hold something with one hand do somthing with the other. The restriction is you are only allowed to eat with the right hand but if you have to and cant avoid touching/holding with the other hand than you can, otherwise always use the hand of choice which is the right.
alhamdulillah sis i feel happy that it was a language mistake and u dnt really eat with ur left :D
I think it's almost a non-issue for born-Muslims because whether you're a practising Muslim or not, just out of culture you're taught to eat with your right hand. At least I've never seen anyone eat with their left hands and my family is full of lefties!
I don't know how it's for converts... would it be hard to switch eating from the left to the right?? I wouldn't think so... does anyone know?
.: Anna :.

Im a convert and I was used to eating with my right anyway, I am right handed so it did always seem more comfy. I dont think its so hard to switch anyway? but sometimes u do spot people eating with the left without thinking :S if its a lil kid u feel okay to tell them to change it, like i do if i spot my nephew doing it but wit adults i feel bit shy like if its a brother aswell it wd b awkard 2 remind them wdnt it :S :S

question, in the british non muslim culture, why is it considered rude or lower class or bad table manners to have the fork in the right hand? i never understood that...

yeh i dont know... i gues its just their custom, cos they use the knife for cutting meats etc and right handed ppl may find easier 2 cut wit the right hence they eat wit the left. my mum has told me off for this in the past that apparently i do it all wrong :embar:
but i think that convention is coming less common now neway
