because its human nature to want to be told you're clever or you're strong or you're smart or you're amazing.
But for some people **coughs MED cough** it can get a lil tedious being told everyday how good you are.

The womans asking that we're only meant to care about ALLAH Ta'ala and our standing and rank infront of Him, so why do we get so attached to what people think of us/. or why do we get so overjoyed when another praises us/ or why do we hanker after other peoples praise.
Thats what she was saying in her deficient way.

oh never really understood tha question...
i think it depends on diff factors like self esteem can be one, eeman and taqwa another..
and its cos we're human we're born weak.. sometimes we need other ppl to praise us to feel good about ourselves.
i heard praise isnt good ...hmmm

Its human nature - simple as that. Malik made a gud point that it depends on different factors like self-esteem, imaan, taqwa etc.
But the thing to be noted is that nothing remains static. There will probably be times when a believer is on a spiritual "high" and at that point feels confident in what he is doing without the need to get approval from others - eg when people come back from hajj/umrah, or after a particular speech which had an effect on the heart/ or at times randomly a person has a strong attraction to the deen and things become easy and others opinions are irrelevant.
But then that doesnt stay the same.

But then that doesnt stay the same.
If we look - NO person has more perfect and more complete and more firm imaan than Nabi :saw:. Yet in His Seerah Mubarakah we see that He :saw: Himself praises the support that He received from Ummul Mu'mineen Khadijah radhiyallahu anha.

Also the Sahaabah Karaam. They themselves complained to Nabi :saw: that their conditions fluctuate and they percieve a difference in themselves when they are in His Blessed Company and when they are with their families at home.
Its clear that having fluctuations and relying on OTHERS for support/encouragement/approval isn't a weakness or a bad thing at all - but with the condition that it is within the limits ALLAH Ta'ala has set down.
Wanting your parents approval for a thing (not just religious but generally), or wanting your mates to praise your new clothing, or expecting support from those close to you when things seem tough - in my opinion isnt anything to worry about at all. And you'll normally find that its the people who mean the most who are the ones whos approval a person most desires - parents, teachers, friends etc.
Perhaps its from ALLAH's mercy that we have this attachment to other humans and not a point of weakness?
wanna carry on med and do a bayan? :D

Theres a dua to say when being praised or when you are praised. Something along the lines of "Oh Allah, do not hold me accountable for what these people say and you are the knower of the unseen"
Rasululah (S) said: ‘If anyone of you is impelled to praise his brother, then he should say: “I deem so-and-so to be…and Allaah is his reckoner…and I don’t praise anyone, putting it (i.e. my praising) forward, in front of Allaah’s commendation, however I assume him so and so’…if he knows that of him.

A man praised another man in front of the Prophet :saw: . The Prophet :saw: said thrice, "Wailaka (Woe on you)! You have cut the neck of your brother!" The Prophet :saw: added, "If it is indispensable for anyone of you to praise a person, then he should say, 'I think that such-and-such person (is so-and-so),' and Allah is the one who will take his accounts (as he knows his reality) and none can sanctify anybody before Allah (and that only if he knows well about that person)."

in think some of this has to do with social conditioning. as babies/toddlers we are praised when we laugh, smile, start talking/walking. this then carries into childhood with our parents/grandparents/teachers praising us. we start to rely on praise to boost part of our self-esteem. if you raised a child without ever praising them then this child wouldnt know what it was missing out on, unless it saw others being praised. if im praising/admiring something or someone i tend to say masha'allah in my head after the praise.

There are two types of praise - halal and haraam.
The haraam type is the one where you become excessive in it and it is percieved that the other person grows in ARROGANCE or when there is an ulterior motive behind it.
The halaal type is where it is sincere and is done with little effect being registered in arrogance levels going up. We see Nabi :saw: praise the Sahaabah Karaam alayhim ridhwaan on occasions and these bring joy to their hearts.
Blanket banning is not what is required by the religion.

It's not difficult at all to understand *Roll Eyes*
The thread title is "praise" so the question is about praise, so what she's saying is,
how comes like we respond so well to it (praise) if we're only menta like want Allah swt to be happy with us and not anyone else?
or in other words,
Why do we like to be praised by people if we're only meant to want Allah Subhanahu wa ta'aala to be happy with us?
since as you know that praising a person (like in that hadith quoted by MalikOne) is forbidden.
it's not hard to understand, you just need to read *Roll Eyes*

is it wrong to think like... well if someone praises you its kinda like confirmation that Allah is pleased with u...:o or is that wrong?
cos u know like...
Abu Hurairah (god bless him) narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said:
“If Allah loves a person, He calls Gabriel saying, 'Allah loves so and-so; O Gabriel! Love him.’ Gabriel would love him and make an announcement amongst the inhabitants of the Heaven. 'Allah loves so-and-so, therefore you should love him also,' and so all the inhabitants of the Heaven would love him, and then he is granted the pleasure of the people on the earth."[Bukhari and Tirmidhi]

Wa alaikumus salaam.
Hmm it's not exactly right, no one is guaranteed that Allah subhanahu wa ta'aala is pleased with you.
the people of earth mentioned in that hadith are the awliya, and the good people, not everyone.
For instance if volt praised me for something i said then than would be a confirmation that i was wrong.
And if someone like Al-irhaab praised me then i might have been right.
But if one rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had to praise me then i'd know that Allah subhanahu wa ta'aala was pleased with me.
But you can't be totally sure that Allah subhanahu wa ta'aala is pleased with you if ordinary people praise you.
hmmm but then again i don't know what i'm talking about.
