As salaamu alaikum, i need help on these two questions please help me before 2:30!!!!!!
I HATE STATISTICS!!!

Q2) The Random variable Y is given by the absolute difference between the scores when two ordinary dice are thrown.
i) find the probability distribution of Y
ii) Illustrate the distribution and describe the shape of the distribution.
iii) Find the values of
a) P(Y<3)
b) P(Y is odd)

Q3) The probability distribution of a discrete random variable X is given by

P(X = r) = kr/8 (kr divided by 8) for r= 2, 4, 6, 7

P(X = r) = 0 otherwise.

i) Find the value of k and tabulate the probability distribution.
ii) If two successive values of X are generated independently find the probability that
a) the two values are equal
b) the first value is greater than the second value.

i know you got the answer anyway but i thought just incase u fall into needing help u can perhaps refer to this, im doing this at the moment and yes S1 sucks, so easy to make a mistake with all the formulas :(

anyway

The Random variable Y is given by the absolute difference between the scores when two ordinary dice are thrown.
i) find the probability distribution of Y
ii) Illustrate the distribution and describe the shape of the distribution.

anyway so you have to draw a table showing the two possible combinations of dices thrown and their difference:

1 2 3 4 5 6
1 0 1 2 3 4 5
2 1 0 1 2 3 4
3 2 1 0 1 2 3
4 3 2 1 0 1 2
5 4 3 2 1 0 1
6 5 4 3 2 1 0

so then u do a distrubution table showing the amount times the number appears and u know its out of 36:

0 6/36
1 10/36
2 8/36
3 6/36
4 4/36
5 2/36
6 0/36

Find the values of
a) P(Y<3)

you do this by times everything b4 3 and adding it together 0*0/36 + 1*10/36 and so on

b) P(Y is odd)

this is like the last question but just everything odd so

1*10/36 + 3*4/36 and so on

Q3) The probability distribution of a discrete random variable X is given by

P(X = r) = kr/8 (kr divided by 8) for r= 2, 4, 6, 7

P(X = r) = 0 otherwise.

i) Find the value of k and tabulate the probability distribution

this question im a little unsure but i think you set it out like this

1 2k/8
2 4k/8 these all equal to one
3 6k/8
4 8k/8
you know that all of this must equal one so u have to use abit of algebra and put into a formula where u can re-arrange it
so it would be like

k( 2 +4 +6+8)/8 = 1

k(20/8)=1 to bring it over to the other side u divide one by 20/8

which gives you 2/5

now u make sure ur answer is correct by putting this value into k and u get (2*2/5)/8 which gives u 1/10 and so on

1 1/10
2 1/5 which all equal to 1
2 3/10
4 2/5

a and b im confused on to be honest trying to get an answer insha'allah
