I am sure that Bid'ah may have been already discussed in this forum; however, I have a different purpose in mind for the good of my Muslim brothers and sisters. I encourage you to please follow my posts and as we are making progress, don't be hesitant to share your comments. I ask you to please have patience and I promise that I will turn this thread into a very fruitful one, Inshallah.
What is Bid’ah? Linguistically, it means a newly invented matter or action. In terms of Sharia’, it means a newly invented component in the religion concerning beliefs and or actions. A particular group, ideology or religious sect may attempt to seek nearness to Allah (swt); their effort may not be supported by any authentic proof neither in its foundations, nor in the manner in which it is performed.
The Prophet (saw) said: “Every innovation is misguidance and going astray” (reported by Abu Dawood No. 4607, Tirmidhee No. 2676, It is Sahih and Ibn Hajr authenticated it in Takhreej Ahadith Ibn ul-Haajib (1/137)
And he (saw) said: “…and every innovation is misguidance and all misguidance is in the Hellfire.” (Reported by an-Nisaee (1/224) from Jaabir bin Abdallah and it is declared Sahih by Shaik ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyah in Majmoo’ ul-Fatawa (3/58)
The Prophet (saw) has also warned us against the people of innovation. He has forbidden us from befriending, supporting or taking from them. He said: “Whoever innovates or accommodates an innovator then upon him is the curse of Allah (swt), His Angels and the whole of mankind.” (Reported by al-Bukhari 12/41, and Muslim 9/140)
In the Islamic text we find the Companions (ra), Tabi’een, and Taba’ Tabi’een warning us from the danger of innovations upon the Ummah. It is because of Bid’ah that the Ummah is divided today and there’s a constant battle of ideas and differences in beliefs and actions.
Ibn ‘Abbaas (ra) said: “Indeed the most detestable of things to Allah (swt) are the innovations.” (Reported by al-Bayhaqee in as-Sunan al-Kubraaa 4/316)
Ibn ‘Umar (ra) said: “Every innovation is misguidance, even if the people see it as something good.” (Reported by Abu Shaama’h No. 39)
Al-Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal once said: “The greatest sinner (fasiq) from Ahl Sunnah Wa Jama’h is better than the most pious person from Ahl-al-Bid’ah.”
‘Abdalah Ibn Mas’ud (ra) said: “Follow and do not innovate, for you have been given that which is sufficient and every innovation is misguidance.” (Reported by Abu Khaithamah in Kitaab ul-‘Ilm No. 540 and declared Shaih by Shaikh al-Albaanee)
‘Abdallah Ibn ‘Abbass (ra) said: “When Bid’ah is created then the Sunnah dies and this continues until that Bid’ah is living and the Sunnah is dead.”
Al-‘Irbaad Ibn Saariyah (ra) report that the Prophet (saw) said: “I have left you upon clear guidance. Its right is like is day. No one deviates from it after me except that he is destroyed.” (Reported by Ahmad, Ibn Maajah No. 43 and al-Haakim and declared Shaih by Shaikh al-Albaanee in as-Sahihah No. 937)
One of the early scholars, Al-Barbahaaree, one of the companions of al-Imam Ibn Hanbal, said: “Beware of Bid’ah, because every Bid’ah started out as something small and resembling the truth and people were fooled by it and followed it until it became bigger and bigger and were trapped by it and it took them out of the fold of Islam.” (I heard this from my Shaykh and I do not remember the source of it, ‘Afwan)
Shaikh Al-Barbahaaree also states: “Also states: May Allah have mercy upon you. Know that the Religion is what came from Allaah, the Blessed and the Most High. It is not something left to the intellect and opinions of men. Knowledge of it is what comes from Allaah and His Messenger, so do not follow anything based upon your desires and so deviate away from the Religion and leave Islam. There will be no excuse for you since Allaah's Messenger explained the Sunnah to his Ummah and made it clear to his Companions and they are the Jamaa'ah and they are the Main Body, and the Main Body is the truth and its followers.”
This matter has also been indicated by al-Imam Malik in a reported saying of his that ought to be recorded in golden ink. And it is his saying: "Whosoever introduces into Islam an innovation, which he deems is good, then he has claimed that Muhammad has betrayed (the trust of conveying) the Message. Read the saying of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic:
Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al-Maytatah (the dead animals - cattle-beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah, or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., or on which Allahs Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering, and that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns - and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal - unless you are able to slaughter it (before its death) and that which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on AnNusub (stone altars). (Forbidden) also is to use arrows seeking luck or decision, (all) that is Fisqun (disobedience of Allah and sin). This day, those who disbelieved have given up all hope of your religion, so fear them not, but fear Me. This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin, then surely, Allah is OftForgiving, Most Merciful. (al-Ma’ida: 3)
So whatever was not (part of) the Religion on that day, is not (part of) the Religion on this day. And the last part of this ummah (nation) will not be rectified, except by that which its first part was rectified by."
Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyah has an excellent saying in regards to Bid’ah: “"In fact, the kufr of Jews and Christians is because of "Bid'ah". They introduced new things into the religion and those things took them completely away from the true message of Musa (Moses) and Isaa (Jesus) Alaihumma Salam".
We must strive for bringing back the Quran and Sunnah into the lives of the Ummah. Indeed, there’s a battle of ideas within Islam and it is because of Bid’ah among many other reasons. It is an obligation upon us to educate one another on the matters of our Deen and Bid’ah in particular. Bid’ah is like ‘Saratan’ (Cancer) of the Ummah; however, for this Saratan there’s a cure and that is the Quran and Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (saw). I shall return with more Inshallah on this subject. In the meantime, please feel free to share with me your thoughts and comments.
