Well i just wanted to clear something up. Since Allah(swt) knows us as well as we know each other, doesn't that mean he knows how we would react to things? So if he knows that why does he test us?

Abdullah,

It goes something like this. Allah (swt) knows what we're going to do. He is aware of it long before we were even created. In one hadith, Muhammed (SAW) tells his Companions he was chosen to be a prophet when Adam (AS) was still in the form of mud & clay.

But we have been created and sent on this earth, so we may not claim to our Lord that we were not given an opportunity to show our obedience to him. Our existence shows that it is our own descision to make and it will be a testament for us (or against) on the day of Judgement.

as-Salâm 'alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I posted links to a book by Dr. Saleh as-Saleh in another thread. The book is concerning the concept of fate in Islam and explains it very nicely. You can find it available online here (http://www.ahya.org/amm/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=12) in full, or a summarized version here (http://understand-islam.net/pafiledb/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=87) on his site.

Concerning your question though, the test is not for Allah’s sake. Allah is not in need of testing us because He already knows how the test will end up. The test is for our own sakes, to show us why we will rewarded or why we will be punished. On the Day of Judgement we will all stand before Allah and be taken to account for the things we have done. Our records will be shown to us so that we will have no excuses.

Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested? [Quran 29:2]

Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. To Us must ye return. [Quran 21:35]

Ye shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions and in your personal selves; and ye shall certainly Hear much that will grieve you, from those who received the Book before you and from those who worship many gods. But if ye persevere patiently, and guard against evil,-then that will be a determining factor in all affairs. [Quran 3:186]

"Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere, Who say, when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return":- They are those on whom (Descend) blessings from Allah, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance. [Quran 2:155-157]

Narated By Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials." (Sahih Bukhari Vol 7, Book 70, #548)
