Thursday 11 January - Demo on 5th anniversary of arrival of the first detainees at Guantanamo Bay
From 10.30am, US Consulate, 3 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh
SACC, Amnesty International and Edinburgh Stop The War Coalition will mark the five-year ‘anniversary’ of the first ‘war on terror’ detainees being transported to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba with a demonstration in Edinburgh. We will be wearing orange boilersuits as a reminder of those being held.
We are calling for the immediate closure of Guantánamo Bay and for all other ‘war on terror’ detention centres also to be identified and closed, with detainees being properly charged before fair courts or released to safe countries.
Assemble at the US Consulate at 10.30am; the letter will be handed over at 11.00 am
After the letter has been handed over, supporters wearing orange boilersuits will walk through Edinburgh via the Bridges and Cannongate to the Scottish Parliament, arriving there by 12.30pm.
If you're unable to come to the US Consulate in the morning, please try to come along to the vigil outside the Parliament at lunch-time to show your support.
A meeting in the Scottish Parliament is being hosted by Tommy Sheridan MSP (Solidarity) - from 12.30-1.30pm. The meeting will feature a screening of the documentary Outlawed - torture, extraordinary rendition and disappearances in the war on terror (27 minutes). A copy of the film has been sent by the American Civil Liberties Union to every member of the US Congress (limited places - contact SACC in advance if you want to attend).
