View Full Version : Web Hosting Question
If I have a website which uses mysql, if I then have another site on a completely different server, is it possible for the second site to access the database from the server hosting the first site?

even if its 2 different hosting companies?
basically, what i want to do is use a free host which supports asp.net and get it to interact with another host hosting a mysql database.

As Salaamu Alaikum,
I'll give you one from mine. PM me a ‘User Name’ and ‘Password’ and I'll set it up for you. Although you'd be limited to access, I can't give you my Control Panel details.

A word of warning though - your site may be significantly slower than other websites when you do this; since the webserver has to communicate with a mySQL server located somewhere else on the internet.
Also it may not work depending on the webserver host's firewall rules...

u run linux right? why don't u try installing mysql on your system, and then try from there?
if u commit to buying a webhost with mysql, then u'd still end up having to learn all the commands to manage a sql server through telnet or something. so u might aswell start learning on ur machine first.... IMHO that is.

i got windows and linux dual boot
I know sql fairly well, so it shouldn't be too difficult to move from sql server to my sql should it?
also, if i set it up on my home computer, that means i will have to learn it on 24/7. i dont really want to do that.
Yep there isn't much difference between SQL Server and mySQL's flavours of SQL. I switch between the two often without getting confused!

well I assumed you leave your comp on 24/7 if u run linux. most linux people tend to do that since linux was made to be left on for years/months. plus, with all that HUGE load time to get into the linux DE, people rather leave it on once it boots so they dont have to go through that process again....
as for switching between sql server and mySQL, i have no clue honestly. I had a very difficult time trying to install a CMS once which required me to install a LAMP stack. I eventually gave up with it since mySQL gave me huge problems in connecting to the database and some other stuff. so other than telling you to use mySQL simply because everyone else on linux advocates it, I really can't say much else. Sorry bhai....
you might want to try mpadc though....they got real experts unlike me :(
