I heard a sunni saying this,
Yes, Yazid did kill Imam Hussein (as) but after he killed him he felt bad and straight away he did matam. Now the followers of Yazid still do matam because we feel bad because our ancestors killed imam hussein.

well, IF, and i say IF, Yazid felt bad why did he go back to get the other members of the prophets family including bibi Zainab who was the first person to arrange the majjlis and not Yazid!!!!
This is a well spread rumour of the Ahl sunnah wal jamah. But YaZid was a wine drinker, sinner, women chaser etc. he never ever followed the sunnah of the prophet but violated each and evry law of islam. After that he comminted the worst one, Harming the members of the prophets household
prophet said abt his family:
They are from me and I am from them, whoever hurts them hurts me:"
The whole concept of Matam is also misinterpreted by people. As the kanah Kaba is misinterpreted by the christians since they think we pray to the stone.
We are te shia of the prophet and his ahlul bayt,, peace be upon them all.
