So, heres another quite random, strange question...
If you brothers were sisters , what would you want for your mahr (dowry) lol ?
Sister contribute too!
or maybe i should pose one at the sisters .. if sisters were brothers, what would u want to give [what would be too much do u think]? and brothers do u feel stressed when u think about mahr (dowry) , like is it a burden ?

yes i do feel its a burden when its the parents who force the girl to ask for excessive amounts of dowry (10s of thousands of pounds).
and its worse when you want to get married and you dont have any money... :)

i know this will be hard for people to believe, but i would want nothing. its the way i am. i've never been able to accept money from anyone.
i used to work as a builder for a little while and the guy used to pay by cash. and i was unable to take it from him. so i said, if you want to pay me, pay it into my account, dont give it in hand.
ah yeah, in the end i quit the job, because he said im only gonna give you cash. so i worked for a month without pay! :D
erm an umrah trip would be nice

The women need to think about this. Do they want money for material things, or have their husbands just save up for when they actually need the money in their marriage? e.g. for children

nothing, im unable to accept money, presents whatever. but im sure there are people who find it easier to accept gifts unlike me. i dont think it is possible for a brother to sound unbiased about this.

And anothr thing, most often its not the girl who decides the amount of mahr, its her PARENTS who mull over it, and ask for an amount they perceive will be useful for her.
Unless you tell your momma and pops beforehand "I want X amount as my dowry"

Hmmmm...mahr doesnt always have to be money.I know a sister who married her husband for £50 and Surah Muhammad. The deal was that he would teach her Surah Muhammad. It is the woman's right, and of what I understand, it is meant to be a gift for the woman as she is 'giving' herself to her husband. So it really is her right to ask for what she wants. However, everyone knows that there is more barakah in the marriage with the smallest dowry, but it still is allowed to ask for more.
I've heard thats why most men find it hard to get married in Arab countries, especially Saudi etc because the women and their families demand such large dowries. They usually cant afford it.:(

well i think its a good idea... i had another type of mahr in mind but then , Allah forbid for all of us,but if a divorce was to happen and its a situation where it has to be given back n all that then , it wont be possible ... its the same with if it was knowledge passed over actually aswell coz u cant exactly shake the knowledge out ur brain back lol...

lol @ planned out ... well , erm .. as i mentioned it wouldnt really work if something bad was to happen [allah forbid-ameen] thats why i said the husbands decision his self should be the mahr ... but er i suppose i would come to some sort of decision if the husband couldnt decide, what ever Allah wills.. & if my parents were to request it be something material that is manageable , whats wrong with that? some sahaba gave materialistic things to their wives for their mahr..?

i thought the mahr was to safeguard her from divorce, so if a divorce situation was to arise she has the mahr to fall back on? how is she going to fall back on an idea like a trip around the world if there is a divorce?

i cant answer that until i find out the purpose for the mahr if it has a purpose. is it simply a gift or is it to safeguard her against a divorce situation if it was to happen?
