Hi, everyone!

I was reading some passages from a translation of the Qur'an (from USC-MSA) and the second chapter goes into some detail about Moses and the revelation at Sinai to the Jewish people.

What does this mean in the Muslim faith?

(I might add to this post if I read further.)

Please elaborate?

How do you mean, what does it mean?

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

he is talking about verse 2:63

"And remember We took your covenant and We raised above you (The towering height) of Mount (Sinai) : (Saying): "Hold firmly to what We have given you and bring (ever) to remembrance what is therein: Perchance ye may fear Allah." "

and 2:64 say

"But ye turned back thereafter: Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allah to you, ye had surely been among the lost. "

also look at chapter 17 which has two verses about Israel...from verse 4 to verse 8

and We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Scripture: Ye verily will work corruption in the earth twice, and ye will become great tyrants.
So when the time for the first of the two came, We roused against you slaves of Ours of great might who ravaged (your) country, and it was a threat performed.
Then we gave you once again your turn against them, and We aided you with wealth and children and made you more in soldiery.
Saying): If ye do good, ye do good for your own souls, and if ye do evil, it is for them (in like manner). So, when the time for the second (of the judgments) came (We roused against you others of Our slaves) to ravage you, and to enter the Temple even as they entered it the first time, and to lay waste all that they conquered with an utter wasting.
It may be that your Lord will have mercy on you, but if ye repeat (the crime) We shall repeat (the punishment), and We have appointed hell a dungeon for the disbelievers.

Also, I have heard that the Muslim faith claims that the Torah, in its word and message, has been distorted. What does this mean, exactly? Does it say this in the Qur'an? What parts or teachings are false according to Islam?

Hello danholo

Maybe you want to check the site below out. There're also more places on the Internet that take up the subject. I'd recommend you to do some googling.

In Surah Al-Baqara it refers to the fact that the Jews made things unlawful to themselves when Allah has made it lawful to them. They changed what He had sent to them.

O you who believe! eat of the good things that We have provided you with, and give thanks to Allah if Him it is that you serve. He has only forbidden you only carrion, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other (name) than (that of) Allah has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. Surely those who conceal any part of the Book that Allah has revealed and take for it a small price, they eat nothing but fire into their bellies, and Allah will not speak to them on the day of resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful chastisement. They are the ones who buy Error in place of Guidance and Torment in place of Forgiveness. Ah! what boldness (They show) for the Fire! Their doom is) because Allah sent down the Book in truth but those who seek causes of dispute in the Book are in a schism Far (from the purpose). (Quran 2: 172-176)

Further, ever more revealing -

And remember Allah took a covenant from the People of the Book (Jews and Christians), to make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it; but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And vile was the bargain they made! (Quran 3:187)

'It' refers to the Scripture.

So what, exactly, has been changed? What is "unlawful"? Obviously, something in Torah that is antithetical to Islam. What is that?
