Yeh and where am I going to find those in the middle of a lesson?

I need suggestions that don't involve corporeal punishment either (why did they ever get rid of that?! )

lol...I don't know...if they are muslim kids then maybe you can tell them about the aakhira or maybe teach them about respect for elders?

Well waht i've learnt from my kiddies is

1. When you walk into the room all eyes are on you..try not to be smiley smiely but try not to seem aggressive...rather just firm

2. Only once you have gained their respect then you can tone down a little

3. I made the BIG mistake of showing myself more of a friend rather than a teacher so when it came to me taking over from the teacher and teachign they didn't give me the respect i deserved because they percieved me as a friend not a teacher...some even talked back to me:S but alhamdulilah i sorted them out lol

My friends a secondary school maths teacher and she's learnt trying not look as though you want to be their pal helps :p

It blurs the lines between teacher, your role, your responsibility and how the kids perceive you.

Be firm. And if all else fails - shout. She shouts a lot at them..and frankly, has put the fear of God into them

Suffice to say, they behave in her class now :hidban:

Depends how bad the school is I guess? hmmm... im thinking u have to make sure they can get away with anything or they dnt think that u will b soft with them. Like my dad used to not let them sit with their friends in lessons and not let any of them talk, apart from in the end of term

Shouting too much can do the opposite of put the fear of god into them though..

I did practice shouting into some kids face after taking him outside the class the other day.. it was fun :D

It was *quiet voice* "Didn't I tell you to do your work and stop talking?"
"Yeh."
*screaming at top of lungs right in his face so the whole of class inside the room and other classes on the floor can hear* "SO WHY WERE YOU STILL TALKING AND DISRUPTING MY LESSON?!" ..and I can't remember what else I said, but I had a good go :hidban:

Lol...good opportunity to take your anger brought on by something else onto them too :D

Too much of anything can have the opposite, un-desired effect. So shouting too much, being too nice may have them be putty in your hands for a while but may also cause them to become more rowdy and stubborn.

My biology teacher was like that, friendly when required and pure evil - but he was an excellent teacher and we all performed well

Alternating between the 2 would be a good balance.

Never ever shout when you're angry.. its not good at all.. you can end up losing it or doing/saying something you shouldn't.

When I shouted at the kid I sent him out first then thought in my head "Right, now I am gonna go out and shout at him REALLY loud" and I was just wondering what reaction I would get.. 'twas an experiment :D

Let me think back to how my teacher made me cry when I was 14 ...
oh Yeah.. she insulted me... lol
You wanna make 'em cry? What works like a charm is threatening them you'll call their parents or actually following through with it... or even calling them one by one in a very serious tone and speaking to them. It works for school here...

what happens when the kids come in? :D

good point :D i give em all a dutty look

last week the kids were doing an assessment in which they were all working in silence, i was sat at my desk marking. About 20 mins into the lesson i hear this sniffling and sobbing, pausing for breath, crying!!! pray, why is this boy crying so hysterically in class? whats happened? so i take him outside really worried and anxious to know what or who has upset him and
when he finally spoke amidst the crying he tells me its because.....

because.....

because....

wait for it...

*bawling*- i lie not!!!

"I left my homework at home miss"

:smack:

when i finally got him to the loo and made his wash his bawling face it took ages for him to calm down and i :buttkick: very nicely and said homework wasnt worth crying over :there: he rang home and had his dad drop it off

worse thing was i couldnt for the life of me remember which homework it was :D

This is actually a really important topic,I cant wait for my son to finish school it fills me with dread to see him go there everyday, on his first day at secondary school he left his bag in front of a fire exit for 5 minutes and was made to stand face against the wall on the stage in the hall in front of everyone for all of his lunch breaks for a week :(

my sons have been faced with some really nasty teachers in school, one teacher screamed at a girl so much he made he cry, when my son ( who was horrified to see him breaking her down like that ) told him sir i think u should calm down a bit please shes really upset, he got taken outside the class pinned against the wall and the teacher screamed in his face that he hated his brother ( who had been left the school more than a year) and he hated him, and called him all the names under the sun.

respect is something earned not just handed out on a plate to gain the respect of children u need to show respectful behaviour towards them, many of them play up because this is what they have learnt from adults around them, and they need good examples. i went to see a teacher about my sons school work once, and she didnt like something i had said and next thing i know she flings open the office door and starts screaming at the top of her voice "get out of my office" ( in front of my son too  ) she then followed me down the long corridors screaming "get out get out or i`ll call the police" i later found out shes head of anger managment for the kids  point is if teachers cant control themselves then how do they expect the kids to learn how to control their anger...

and all that chatting about kids in the staffroom is terrible u get one teacer who hates a kid and then they spread their poison to all the other staff and the poor kid doesnt get a break for the next five years. teachers can either be remembered for life as someone who bought a whole new world to a kid, or they can emotionally scar kids for life and make their school days miserable.

How can a not-very-scary-looking hijaabi teacher make insane 14 yr olds cry? :help:

Miss water....:D ....now now you dont want to make the brats cry staright away...give it a few lessons.

every teacher is different- depending on the level of ability and aptitude of the students they will respond to behaviour management techniques very differently.

if you want to get them to think about what theyve done first of all its soo important not to let them know theyve got to you or rattle your cage. (very hard i know, this nutcase girl tipped out the entire bin in my classroom once she was complete  :rotfl: and i just stood there as the class waited for a reaching and said right emma, now pick it all up and she just looked at me waiting for me to scream my lungs out. and this psycho kid and i mean real  got on her hands and knees and picked it all up.)

see when you silent it worse than screaming in a lot of ways cos they dont know what the hell to expect :eek3: dont ever let them see you upset!!!
and if you make a threat always carry it out

e.g right, its about time i discussed your phobia to my lessons with your parents. read out their phone number and address  and call em right in

if there are very very disruptive students and one of my friends has done this with a lot of success, call in their ammee jee and ask her to sit in your lesson. then watch your learning objectives being met with flying colours ;)

i completely agree with you:up: . kids need to learn through respect not fear and screaming at them until your blue int he face is going to mean youve lost self control and about to erupt- the next step is usually physical and i know of teachers who have done this and had it covered up because of an adults word agaianst a childs

no child should ever feel intimidated of coming to school becuase of teacher bullying, asiya did you ever lodge a complaint with the school? because if it goes to the board of governors- which is who you should address it too, theres usally and investigation.

you dont need to shout at kids to get them to comply. you explain your actions in a rational and collected manner and discuss how 'fair' your reprimand is with them so they understand why your taking the action you are.
Theres good in every single person and kids more than anyone else need reminding of it.

Im a firm and strong advocate of positive discpline.

where i work now its not done maliciouly we talk about the funny things a kid has done. like one girl coming to school so sleepy she still had her fluffy slippers on :D

there are one or two who talk down about kids in the staffroom but be assured, they largely get ignored

I have tried complaining but no ones listening, im sure if i was dressed in a pencil skirt and a pair of high heels and my kids were white ( theyre the only black kids in the school then it would be a whole other kettle of fish, i went to the headmaster to express my concerns and he just fobbed me off and said " you look like a woman on the edge!!!" ( cheeky so and so) i wrote to the head of the education department and they said it wasnt a matter for them, we dont have school boards here the headmaster is head of the school and he can do what he likes.

when a teacher assaulted a girl on a school trip,in front of my son, and the girl complained about it, they bought in her father ( whos a police officer) who they knew had beaten the daylights out of her before because they had to call in social services and have photos taken of her injuries the year before, and told him your daughter has an anger problem, like u said the teachers gang up on the kid to hide what they did because the adults word will always be taken over the kids.

I like your style though sis emaan masha Allah how u dealt with that girl and the litter bin :D thats the key stay calm and dont let them ruffle your feathers  these poor little people need some guidance in life and school may be the only place they get it may Allah ta ala reward you and all our muslim teachers and give you sabr amin.

.

That just bloody unbelievable :55: i cannot understand why these people stay in the profession

where i work i see the school for so many kids as a sanctuary from the abuses they suffer at home, but to come across instances of teacher violence makes me seethe. teachers covering teachers backs

chained water...this is why i would advise you when you get into a school full time, stay aloof so you dont have to fraternise with moroninc teachers who occupy every staff list in every school. and yah sometimes those cretins are on senior management. but once youve displayed your competancy and excellence with pupil relationships and exam results with impressive value added scores you wont get bothered and you'll be in a position to call more shots.

i really hate this aspect of my job which is why i intend to quit inshallah in a few years time.

the class used to be a few pupils short every time he nodded off.

really? thats so funny...i'm sure you all took advantage of that :p

i used to have this really dopy electronics teacher...everyone would just wind him up all the time..and you could hear him shouting all the time (other students would come out their lessons to have a laugh)...once i had to draw this thing...and well..i'm not exactly the most artistically gifted person in the world...so he did the work for me..then at the end of the lesson he was like 'wow hafsah..this is amazing work...why can't you all work like hafsah?!! here...A*' (he was dead serious!)

How can a not-very-scary-looking hijaabi teacher make insane 14 yr olds cry? :help:
sister i dont envy you!
I have a good friend whop used to teach secondary school math, ans she told me to be a sucessful teacher in UK you have to put on your "teacher" persona, and be kinda tough, firm but not too harsh, its hard to get the balance right but when you do it'll all fall into place.

She got her biggest problems from one boy who used to shout racisit slurs at her and hang out with a group of racisit white kids....come parents even she was:rubeyes: to see his mum n dad, mum was black and dad white... she just sat dumbfounded!! the kid was having "issues" with being mixed race mashallah!!

just a lil story for u there!

i live close to a secondary school and i can hear the teachers screaming at the kids from my house  what i always wonder about is if u did that to someone in the street it would be called a verbal assault and u can get them aressted for it so how come teachers are allowed to treat children like that i think its pretty outrageous :torture: they should have more respect for people children i wouldnt even treat my own kids like that :(

Eemaan
11-12-06, 10:03 PM
this philsophy i will alwasy hold: never speak to a child you teach in a way you would never address your own child.

that should be you threshold for acceptable behaviour for teachers towards another persons child.

that brat your talking to, no matter how annoying and irksome they are, is the love of some parents life, their angel :)

:jkk: sis but i have a LOT of failings as a teacher and much room for improvement. i genuinely love my job and love the kids i teach. the day i stop teaching for that purpose is the day i will leave.

im labelled a 'saddo' at work:D , but ireally dont care cos i love my job 95% of the time, i love engaging minds, getting kids to think, teaching them their worth.

i know its cliched, but they really are our tomorrow and its a huge burden of responsibility in terms of dawah and nuturing the muslims i have in my classes.

but back to my hobby horse, we need more muslim males in the secondary teaching profession :(

Basically... Threaten them that you'll call their parents. Worked like a charm when I was that age, the students would be in tears and freaking out. Also what worked was isolated meetings with a strict teacher or principal...one student at a time. Scary times.

tell them you know all their personal secrets cos they're all in their permanent records. being teenagers its a tough time for them so that should be enough to send them over the edge.

also specifically victimise one child in the room. preferably the one who looks nearest to crying. all the others will be petrified into obedience.

and it shows in the way they teach...and they way they treat the kids...and screw up their futures

I became a teacher so that I could get school dinners for life.. you know those lovely puddings they do, the chocolate slab ones or the sticky hedgehog ones, with warm custard... mmmm, deeelish! :inlove: ..haven't had one yet though, because the canteen is too much of a jungle for me to have the time or space to ponder over what desert to get..

Plus you get to write on the whiteboard.

And you get to shout at kids all day long :D

i would work with him on a one to one level- or with a small group. help encourage him to share his knowledge, understanding and application of skills within a small group to help him gain confidence here. try this for a few weeks, and then turn it up a notch and set a whole class excercise on doing a one minute presentaion. and when he partakes, praise the hell out of him for being so brilliant. :D ring his parents and share the joy :)

Hmm most teachers don't like the older ones :S But year sevens can be rude actually.

I think once they start their GCSE's/ final year of school they start maturing.
