BANKSTOWN CITY COUNCIL CANCELS VENUE FOR KHILAFAH CONFERENCE
Sydney, Australia - The decision taken today by Bankstown City Council to cancel the venue for the up-coming Khilafah Conference displays the hollowness of the ‘free speech’ rhetoric.
Without proper explanation or consultation, the council has unilaterally withdrawn the availability of the Bankstown Town Hall as the venue for the Khilafah Conference to be held on the 27th January 2007.
Wassim Doureihi, spokesperson for Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia, says: “The decision taken today by Bankstown City Council speaks volumes of the empty rhetoric surrounding the supposed noble epitomes of western liberal democracy.”
“Bankstown City Council will have to explain to the Muslim community and the wider Australian audience why it deems it unacceptable for the Muslim community to advocate for peaceful political change in the Muslim world, to campaign for representative government in the Muslim world and to see the end of tyranny and dictatorship in the Muslim world.”
“Through its decision today, Bankstown City Council has set a dangerous precedent by transforming itself into the public thought police. The council has publicly declared that constructive political discourse is only acceptable when Islam is removed from the national conversation.”
Bankstown City Council has achieved through blatant discrimination what State and Federal governments could not achieve through contested legislation. Philip Ruddock, the Federal Attorney General, has already acknowledged that there is no basis under Australian law to ban the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir. Speaking on Southern Cross Radio yesterday, Mr Ruddock stated: “We looked very closely at the organisation some time ago to see whether or not it met the criteria to be banned as a terrorist organisation in Australia … It doesn't mean that we agree with what it's saying, but there are strict criteria for banning organisations and when those enquiries were undertaken we didn't have sufficient evidence.”
So if Phillip Ruddock, the Federal Attorney General, agrees that there is no justification to ban the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir, how can Bankstown City Council override the decision of the Federal Government?
Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia will pursue all legal avenues to contest the decision taken by Bankstown City Council, and despite repeated rejections, will continue to request a meeting with the council to discuss these recent developments.
Ends.

A SYDNEY council has cancelled a town hall booking for a radical Islamic conference, claiming its host, Hizb ut-Tahrir, has incited hatred at similar evens in the past.
The Sunni Islamic group advocates the revival of the Muslim caliphate, an Islamic superstate that once stretched across the Arab world to Spain.
Bankstown City Council says one of the group's speakers made hateful comments about women and challenged the authority of the Australian Government at a previous event at Bankstown Town Hall.
"They made strong, negative comments inciting hatred towards women," Bankstown Mayor Tanya Mihailuk said. "Much stronger than Sheikh (Taj al-Din) al-Hilali's comments," she said of the controversial Sydney cleric who caused a storm last year when he likened scantily clad women to meat.
The organisation, whose name means "The Party of Liberation" requested a booking for a conference at the town hall last year titled: "The Illegality of the state of Israel," which was turned down by the council.
"The (event's) promotional material was shocking," Cr Mihailuk said. "It showed daggers with blood put through the state of Israel.
"It would have certainly breached our conditions of hire in that it would incite racial vilification and violence."
The spokesman for Hizb ut-Tahrir, Wassim Doureihi, rejected the claims as "baseless".
He denied hateful comments were made by the group's speakers and said the party had no designs to overthrow the Australian Government.
"What we are advocating is political change in the Muslim world. We're not advocating political change in this country," he said. "We're not engaged in terrorism, nor do we advocate terrorism.
"ASIO is very familiar with our work and we've met them on a number of occasions."
Of the Khilafah Conference that was scheduled for late January, he said: "We're asking the Muslims and the wider Australian audience to play a pivotal role in affecting peaceful political change throughout the Muslim world."
Mr Doureihi said the organisation advocated change by peaceful means only.
Yet a section on its website, www.risala.org, urges Somali militants to wage jihad against foreign troops.
"O Muslims, Hizb ut-Tahrir urges you to give victory to Somalia; this is an obligation, commanded by Allah, the Exalted," it reads. "If you do not go forth, he will punish you with a severe punishment, and will bring in your place a people other than you."
Cr Mihailuk said the council initially accepted the conference booking because it was made under another name.
Hizb ut-Tahrir is not classified as a terrorist organisation in Australia.

A MUSLIM group that planned to hold a meeting in a Sydney town hall has had its booking cancelled after previously breaching a hire agreement not to incite hatred, racism and discrimination.
The group, Hizb ut-Tahrir, has been linked to the London bombings and is banned by several European and Middle Eastern countries.
Hizb ut-Tahrir had booked the Bankstown Town Hall in Sydney's southwest for a conference on January 27 under the name Risala, a Bankstown Council spokeswoman said.
"The program is not being done by Risala, but by a group called Hizb ut-Tahrir," she said.
"We've had bookings with that group in the past and they have been in breach of their terms and conditions for hire and we no longer hire out to that organisation."
She said one of the conditions of hire was that an organisation could not incite hatred, racism, or forms of religious, ethnic or sexual discrimination.
Wassim Doureihi, a spokesman for Hizb ut-Tahrir, said the group had previously booked conferences at the council under the name Risala.
"Its decision to withdraw our application for the venue is tantamount to them acknowledging publicly that the Muslim voice will not be accepted in the public debate," Mr Doureihi said.
He said the group was advocating political change, seeking a single Muslim government for the whole of the Muslim world that would oppose tyranny and oppression in dictatorships.
The organisation was banned in Muslim dictatorships but not throughout Europe, he said.
Hizb ut-Tahrir had requested a meeting with Bankstown Council, which would be held later today.
NSW Opposition Leader Peter Debnam today called on the federal and state governments to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir.
"I'd also say to the federal and state attorneys-general: 'Review that group, they are an extremist Muslim group'," Mr Debnam said.
"They're outlawed around the world, in other places, let's outlaw them here and do it quickly."
