Have you ever stopped to think...someone on Ummah might actually be deaf? I wonder if anyone is...

If you are deaf...or work with deaf people...or dont even, you might have learnt BSL (British Sign Language) or ASL (ag..ahem, American Sign Language) and hey, even South Africa and Australia have their own forms...

Its funny, alot of people are under the impression that all deaf people in the world speak with the same kind of hand movements...not the case... :)

So are you deaf? Do you speak either? Are you trying to learn? Do you need a hand with trying to find out how to learn?

This thread is for all things deaf and sign...

Where do you study deaf studies and what does that include?

And yeah, you tend to have to make out the alphabet on the hands of blind people...

erm shes studying at uni,

shes hoping to go london..i dunno whats there. but shes always been passinate about it..

i think deaf studies include learning of how the 'deaf' lead their lives, and the sign language inc of course the facts. and how to handle stuff.

one of the things that impressed my about GPU that set an excellent examples was the fact they had a signer on stage. this doesnt happen at all islamic events- but must, so the level of inclusivity was appreicated mashallah

I have deaf cousins but I usually need to write down everything on paper or spell each word out coz I can't catch it. Their parents just sort of pick it up by constantly speaking (in sign language) to them.

Honestly, if you spend a while with them, youd be able to pick it up in an instant...

As Salaamu Alaikum,

I've always wanted to learn BSL. When I was in Secondary School (or was it Primary School) we visited this deaf school, there I learnt how to say "My name is Saeed" in BSL. And then later on at school I learnt how to say something rude in BSL, or that’s what I've been lead to believe.

A lot of Colleges teach BSL part-time, one evening a week. I think one day I'll get up and register myself.

Ma'aSalaama

Most British local authorities have day or evening classes teaching Sign if you want to learn it. It's an elegant and beautiful language. It's also been successfully used with severely mentally handicapped people, babies and animals to accompany or substitute for speech.
Two very interesting books: Nora E Groce: Everyone here spoke sign language: Hereditary deafness on Martha's Vineyard. The island of Martha's Vineyard had a much hiugher than average deaf population, for genetic reasons, and the local SL was used by hearers as well as deaf people.
Oliver Sacks: Seeing Voices: A Journey Into the World of the Deaf.

:O recently ive been going through this sign language craze! i really want to learn it too but the classes at the local colleges started in september and they cost £144 (i know its not that expensive but when youve gotta pay 3 grand already, you dont want any extra burden on your folks) so i just went to the library and borrowed some books- inshallah i hope to learn bits and bats in my free time. I think its so awesome how you can 'talk' using actions and impressions.

Haha, same here...

Your local colleges should teach it..

I started because I was in Regents Park Mosque once, and I accidently walked into the wrong room. And in this room, 2 brothers had Fatiha projected on the wall behind them, and were doing a dars/halaqa/circle in sign language to all these deaf people about the tafsir...

And my face:

What happens if you are an amputee as well as deaf :p
That is totally different to ASL alphabet which is done with just one hand. I am seeing a dactor to find out if my hearing loss is environmental(most likely) or caused by some disease or atrophy of the inner ear

Doctors used to think people naturally got deafer as they got older. It may not be true, or certainly not as true as they thought. Hearing loss as you get older is probably almost entirely environmentally induced. It might be a good idea to make Sign a compulsory language in schools: all those people with i-pods and walkmen stuck in their ears will find it useful now and essential later.

Yeah I figure it's environmental too. I have spent a good portion of my adult years working in noisy environments and my stereos have always had a single setting...loud

What I find funny is how deaf people take the **** out of us when we can't do it properly.

Eg, My deaf cousin bros were getting in trouble once by some next guy. And the guy was trying to say "LOOK AT ME". He was holding his fingers like a "bullocks" sign and pointing vigorously at his eyes :rotfl: It was hilarious!! My cousins were cracking up while they were getting told off, they even went around telling us all about it...I thought jeez man they even backbite too!! :torture:
