I'm an American who has been proposed to by a Pakistani, we met through the internet and have never met in person.
He says that in order for me to marry him in Pakistan that I need to present a certificate of some type saying that I am a certified Muslim.
Not that I would have a hard time with a local cleric making a certificate up for me to present to him, but I have never heard of this type of document.
I'm sure some of you will be able to help me with clarifying if this is true or not.
Thanks much!

 What certificate?
i think you can get certificates..like for example if you are a revert..and you want to go for ummrah/hajj...saudi officials ask for a certificate to show you are now muslim
its odd they should ask for one when you wanna get married...but maybe thats just what they do there
errr you never met him?
:eek3:

or
if u dont hold Pakistani nationality than he might need it to get u a N.I.C
u can always ask him the details

he has a right to know about his future wife if she is muslim or not, a certificate can help him/his family remove any doubts
but thats like saying cause I'm white I'm not a Muslim, if he cant trust a Muslim cause we all have to tell the truth, then who is he to judge?
EDIT: but do come to think about it, i do understand what you mean though :)

who knows what his intentions r
may b he belives in her but to b on safe side needs a certificate as proof of her wife is a Muslim or to clear confusion of his family, may b his job is needs a certificate
in Pakistan there r few sensitive jobs where u cant marry any1 from outside the country if u do u lose ur job or u need a certificate of sum sort etc
ah, i understand, thank you for clearing that up for me :)

I think a certificate of this nature would be needed for administration purposes of nikah document,
if the sister in question is a revert then she needs to provide proof to say that she has reverted..its like a divorcee sister getting married again, she needs to provide proof that she is divorced doesnt she, because at the end of the day the imam who is conducting the nikah needs to be assured that the two who he is conducting the nikah for are allowed, islamically, to get married to each other...as he also will be held accountable for his actions he needs exhaust all avenues to ensure that the marriage is hala inshaAllah. Being an imam is a difficult job, with huge amounts of responsibilities and consequences of those responsibilities
but the sister needs to clarify this situation with the brother as opposed to asking all us really...and then come back to us with what he says if he sounds a bit dodgy :D
but its a bit strange to be a certified muslim ...:D..kinda cool actually :D
