Salamualaykum lovely and clever peeps:D
I'm trying to develop a research topic on Modern European History (already have one but just curious about people's interests) and I know all of you mostly coming from the UK and some from Europe and the US studied this era in history in high school. Tell me what do you find interesting about Modern European History? which era, event and who fascinated/fascinates you the most that make you wanted/want to know more and in depth about it. Modern European History according to some historians covers the era of European Enlightenment to the era of the Cold War, the fall of the Soviet (well actually it is debateble). Thank you:D
Ok so you want something from about the 1500's on until about 1980?

it should be very specific akhi, so choose in between. Like you know maybe since youre a military man, maybe youre interested in Napoleon's Setback in Waterloo:D
:D good thread!
me personally - The Cold War to Detente. Riveting stuff. nuclear arms racing to the 1979 soviet war in afghanistan, including the phenomenal development of the mujahideen forces. political liberalisation of the Sov U, evolution of nuclear forces, nuke weapon typologies and strategies and arms racing again.
sis do the cold war! wealth of information available on it,
Bosnian & Rwandan Gencide and the nature of genocide. i did my thesis on this :) good booK anatomy of human destructiveness by erich fromm
:hidban: i wish i was studying agen! :crying2:

whoooppss the Balkan and Rwandan Genocides are very recent my lovely ukhti:D the first one though, is excellent:up: Thank you sweety.
Ok well most of my interest in Europe would be before the reformation like the sheltering of refugees from the inquisition by holland or the weaponry of midieval europe. Since the renaisance though I would have to say the most interesting thing for me would be the stories of WW1. It's not so much the factual, cut and dried chronology of the events but speaking to men that were there and the individual stories.
Mind you, the movement of the science of medicine from the superstitious practices of barber/surgeons to what we now have is equally fascinating. The works of DaVinci and how they still have repercussions that affect us today might also be a good topic.
Sorry if my reply seems disjointed but I'm very tired and should get some sleep. In fact, I was off to bed when I saw this thread :D

al give you all the helpp you need sis, just give me a shout :D
i narrowed the genocides down to study the phenomena of mass rape to its history and osychology and really analysed the finer detail. make your study stand out and be 'different'. its comon and very easy on courses to regurgitate and reinvent the same stuff so be wary :nervous:

I find the troubles between the catholics and protestants interesting in northern ireland. Dont know if that is part of modern euoropean history!
Why Britain started to demilitarize so early in the 20th century; despite concerns of the growth of military power of foreign nations - especially as this led to its submission of a world power over to the United States...
The conflict between the Protestants and the Catholtics in Northern Ireland, too, is interesting.

I find the holocaust to be the most interesting thing for me... but I think history students get sick of it, from those I know, cos it is covered soo much during school and then further during a level and even uni. I only did history to GCSE tho unfortunately. But anyway probs the reason the holocaust is very interesting is cos there is actually so much info available on it, and also things which make us able to understand it on a personalised level such as diary of Anne Frank and also survivors who are still alive today who can tell their stories and such. I find it more interesting than like just battles or political policy or historical figures etc, because of that human or personal aspect to it which actually makes it something which impacts more and has a greater effect of staying in ur memory than when u learn just something about details of economic policy and what effect that had on this and that in history etc... Also it is interesting to look at how was it that this was actually able to happen, how has Hitler n co managed to create a situation where people were behaving quite indifferently to that atrocity, and also to look at where the same things are happening again in other places to other communities (like bosnia, but u said that is too recent for ur thing, or outside of europe more places). Then inside that topic there are alot of small aspects which can be picked out n focused on, like one which I did find interesting but iv not studied it alot is about the experimentation on twins in nazi concentration camps..
Anyway as I said, i bet u dnt want 2 do it cos the topic gets covered so much in schools, but personally that is my most interesting one.
Other than that, first world war is also quite interesting, for me if u take it to a personalised level like studying about the soldiers, for example the mental effects on the soldiers bc they were very young n not expecting what they actually got, which was the trench warfare etc... signed up expecting to be like glorious solider for their country etc n then what they actually faced, which u can study for example thru poetry of those eg wilfred owen, or letters home from the soldiers to ppl waiting @ home

Yes - the daily lives of the soldiers, considering their age, and the effects of the unexpected events of the war had on them sparked, IMO, the best literature of all time :D I did it for A-Levels
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.
GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And floundering like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

well, since you're Muslim, you may want to consider an Islam-related topic, such as Spanish Muslims and their experience during the Franco era.

I'll take Te'oma's question on what is modern(?)
I am fascinated with how technology and man co-evolved.
Tools: Fire. The spear. Clothing. Shelter. The plow. Herds. Villages. Horses. Plumbing. Writing. Metalwoking. Cargo ships. Radio communication. The internet.
How does Technology effect man. How does man effect technology.

Which empires do you guys believe had the most influence in Europe.
I believe the Ottoman had quite an impact.
The Ottoman empire when it took over the Balkans it has a lot of influences that still exist in nations traditions. Like Balkan nations now all have similar recipies for example Baklava. Language influences were also big and still exist. In Bosnia if someone asks to come over then the reply would be 'Bujrum' which means welcome. The music of the Balkan all sound very similar.

Yeah strangely enough Europeans still argue over Early Europe:S. Like Macedonian Slavs and Macedonian Greeks. Don't you if you know about Alexander the Great. Well either can't decide if he is Greek or Slavic. His mother had a Greek name but that still isn't enough to prove he was a Greek. Some Greeks even argue that Macedonia (FYROM) is Greek land:S.

that falls under the ancient history where alexander's era is labelled as the Helenic Age and era after his death to the fall of egypt to Rome labelled as Helenic Age. As far as i know Macedonia was part of the Greek civilization.

Macedonians thought they were. Greeks thought they weren't. However, as the Macedonian army was much more powerful than the army of any Greek state and the kings of Macedonia not very nice chaps, the Greeks had to be polite about it. One reason alexander set out to conquer most of the known world was simply that the Greeks- including his tutor, the philosopher Aristotle- thought the further away from Greece he was the better, so they pointed him at Persia because they thought it no great loss if the Persians and the Macedonians got rid of each other. After he'd defeated the Persians they wanted to get him even further away...
