Several methods are use....

the ones we use at work (legit hacking..testing for security purposes only)

is we gather as much info as we can about the Target/host/server..find out the IP addresses what OS and what software its using and everything else....

we then look for well known bugs related to the software..we then use this to try and exploit the system.....

thats one way of doing it......

other ways do.....i wont say......or ill be breaching company policy :)

By the way how do good brothers and sisters think he should best explain it because if it is tailored to the understanding of you all respectivly the students then it would be more like drinking water then eating thorns (i.e some of you may experience this in your u.s and u.k schools and i sympathise with you)

This is a excellent forum for learning hacking. After you read the posts out here for about a month i think you should inshallaah have enough knowledge to make a start and try out things on your own.

Fellas like brother Umar could also participate here cause they got experienced hackers answering the posts so perhaps he could lend them a hand inshallaah. I'd like to see the muslim ummaah well versed with computers and hacking:cool:

Do a search on Google for "hacking tutorial".

And the very first page that comes up, guess where it's hosted...? :D

But to be honest, following those instructions will make you a 'script kiddie' at the most, not a "real" hacker.

If you learn Unix system administration ("sysadmin" for short), then hacking will come naturally as you learn.

Ideally, to be able to call yourself a "real hacker", you should have a good knowledge of C/C++ and Assembly, and be able to muck about with the code of *nix kernels. Furthermore, "real hackers" don't go around doing malicious things.

BTW, we need some extra sysadmins over here at Ummah, PM me if you can help.

P.S. I currently don't have time to teach people sysadmin, but maybe in the summer holidays if I don't go abroad.... anyway, contact me if you live in London. The agreement is that you must promise to become a backup sysadmin for Ummah.com - learning sysadmin from us and then "running away" is out of the question!!!

I too get annoyed at how broad the term "hacker" is becoming!

I'd be ok with calling someone a "hacker" if he can, as a normal user, use a kernel flaw to escalate himself to root user.

That's why I wouldn't give you a shell account, oneshot!

If I gave someone a normal user account on one of our servers, and if that person could make use of a 'bug' in the operating system to, basically, turn their normal user account into a 'system administrator' account (which gives them the power to do anything to the website running on that server) - then I would be happy with calling that person a hacker.

I hope that's more understandable....

No offence intended, but you'll need to learn more about computing first. You can't "jump the gun". As I said earlier, if you learn Unix system administration then "hacking" will come naturally. I'd say hacking is a necessary part of sysadmin knowledge, as you'd need to have a knowledge of hacking techniques in order to prevent them.
