salam alaikum
inshallah id be so grateful if some of you ummah people could give me some advice.
basicly ive dun 2 years of A levels right and now im doing 1 yr intensive A levels since i didnt do very well unfortunately :( although alhamdulilah i got brilliant GCSE results:)
but now heres the hard bit, im soo stuck on what course to do at uni:( i have absolutely no idea wht to do lol so i kind of decided to do a finance related course.
then today my mates were telling me how good dentistry is and tht i shud do it no matter wht, i actually wos gonna apply for dentistry until i got my results :embar: so now i dont knw wot to do. if i do a finance course then tht wud be 3 years but if i wos to do dentistry then it would be 6 years since i wud hve to apply for sept 2008 :rubeyes: :rubeyes: :rubeyes: :rubeyes: :rubeyes:

lol @ grandad.. ermm it depends on what u like doing what r ur interests? and what did u do ur alevels in? if uve done A-levels in science subjects den u can consider science related degrees... or if u wnat to go into health profession than u can consider ?? optometry? orthoptics (i wantd to do that:(), physiotherapy, psychololgy, podiatry... der r lots of em... go nd c ur careers advisor

do radiography 3 yrs degree n then ur garanteed a job after that n the nhs pay all ur uni fees too :up: and its pretty rewarding since u will be treating cancer patients

i think first of all
i know careers advisors are by and largre pretty useless
1. but i would advise before you on to choosing a career in to do some work experience with whatever field your remotly interested in at the moment.
spend two weeks with a financial consultant or dentist, do it free it will be worth you not making the mistake of doing somthing you hate later on
2.take of those free career tests on line.

Finance?
Accounting is longgg, u do 3 yrs at uni n then a few more years doing some accounting related course like CIMA or something :S
Dentists, Hmmm, i read in newspaper last yr or this yr that they get arnd 40-80K!! :eek:
Markeing is interesting, law is long, accounting is long, Information systems/computing is long.
If you know anyone who has been university and now has a job ask them for some advice/info.
i think the brother need to mention what a levels he is doing for anyone to give him some sound advice. Some courses like dentistry have pre requisites in their Alevels...so if you have doneArt, Latin and history then i dont really think that dentistry will be your forte nor will you be considered for the course unless the dent school is desp for candidates
have a look at your options, look at your a levels..you are doing an intensive year so its still arly days to chop and change your Alavels so long as you are willing to put the work in inshaAllah.
Medical fields are good, but only do it if you really want to, the money is great yes, but you cant do a job you dnt really like. I know i moan about my job but Alhamdulilah i dnt not look forward to going into work...i love what i do and i love my staff alhamdulilah.
at the end of the day you will be working till...when....er..60, if Allah wills for your lfe to be that long, ..so choose wisely dear bhai

someone gave the advice of seeing it urself like work with dentist or whatever u want to do is the bezt wy to find out i guess. i changed my career after working and seeing it for myself lolz. althou make a decision before u go 2 uni. i suggest don't go undecided from my experience. i wasted 2 yrs(i m so stressed)figurin out what i want do rest of my life and the worst part is i m still confused. so have it really done that u wanna do this no matter what happens(unless u really start to hate it) okiz i hope u make a good decision with ur interests Wasalaaam

you know you could always retake a module or two if you wana boost your grades up or somethin
About going to law-after youve done your degree its hard to find a job and stuff cuz i know someone that did law and shes been lookin for a job since last year. Guess it mite be easier if you lived in London or somethin
Im in the same boat as you..as to where to go and what to do next but ive still got another year left to think about it so yhhh..

Let me take this opportunity to give you some careers advice, specifically about university.
Before I do this, let me put a few things into context.
Alhamdulillah, we are blessed to be living in a part of the world where the greatest institutes of learning are at our doorsteps. If you put your self into the shoes of a poor young man in say for example Afghanistan, you will notice that quality education is non existent, beyond your reach, more scarce than water.
Now think about this. We live in Britian (I assume you do), and we have some of the BEST UNIVERSITIES in the world! Many a million have dreamt in the the past, and many a million of our times dream today, and many a million of the future will dream of having such a great opportunity to develop themselves.
This is indeed a blessing and one that as Muslims, we must utlise, as we seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave. We do not need to "seek knowledge even if unto China", for we are the neighbours of the centres of worldy knowledge.
So brother, my advice is, TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY! Do Not let it go!
Here are some common excuses.
"It's too long!" - I've been at university doing my undergrad, now doing postgrad into my 5th year - doesnt even feel like five days! Time flies when you are at university. In fact, I find it hard to contemplate that I will have to start work after few months and move on from the university scene!
Dont let this be an excuse - even if you want to Denistry - 6 years will feel like 6 days. Although, these years will be some of the toughest, from sleepless nights, all nite revisions, living on take aways, but the fruits of hardship are sweet and I can tell you this from experience.
It's too expensive - there are so many ways to overcome this. Seek financial advice, but never give up because its "too expensive". I know a brother who took one year out, worked full time and funded his studies through that.
I'm not clever - Who said you have to be clever to study at university? Intellect is but one quality of a student and by no means the most important. There are people who failed their A Levels, re took their A Levels, failed again, retook the third time, got to Medical school and became doctors. What mattes is your determination, will power and self esteem. Remember, Allah created us in the best of forms, and we are superior over all other creatures because of our Aql.
i dont know what to do? - Do something, but dont do nothing, doing nothing will get you nothing, you will achieve nothing, and be nothing and have nothing. Try and try your best. Do something that you like, that you are good at, that you can spend hours reading about, dont worry about money, status or how long it takes. These are not issues at all. What matters you like what you do and you can give it the time and dedication it deserves.
Because it's way passed when I should have slept - I'm gonna stop here before I bore you to death.
But before I do, i would like to offer you something. I know many brothers and sisters at various universities studying various subjects at various years.
