View Full Version : umrah without mahram?
AsslamOAlaikum
i know that you can't do hajj without a mahram but does the same apply to umrah? or can u do umrah without a mahram?
a woman cannot travel outside of her city without a mahram full stop, unless her life is in danger and she has to flee.
the prophet salallahu alleyhi wa salam said “no woman should travel without a mahram.” sahih bukhari & muslim
“The Prophet salallahu alleyhi wa salam said: ‘No woman should travel except with a Mahram, and no man should visit a woman unless her Mahram is with her.’ A man said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, I want to go out with such-and-such an army and my wife wants to go to Hajj.’ He said, ‘Go to Hajj with her.’” al-Bukhaari.
this is a beautiful part of our religion and something that protects us from harm insha Allah :)
may Allah ta ala give u the means to make ummrah with a mahram amin

Are your mum's brothers regarded as your mehrams, if you wanted to go on umrah with them?

Yes they are because they are your uncle :)

unis within london (if you live in london) is fine, anything outside of your locality is considered traveling and therefore you would need a mahram.

The ruling, I believe is a woman shouldn't travel over 48 miles without a mahram . .

that means that if someone lives in City A and only lives 10miles away from City B, and City C is only another 30miles then they can travel within all three cities.
whereas locality limits you to one city where the next be 1 mile or 100.

I have always understood it to be 48 miles regardless if you leave the city or not. If I travel to Manchester from where I am and it's within 48 miles (it is if the right route is taken!), then it's ok, imo.
and Allah(SWT) knows best.

it was explained to me by a scolar that this is the danger of following blindly madhab rulings, without understanding the specific question asked, and the daleel behind the ruling. All of the evidence must be taken into consideration, Allah ta ala has told the beleiveing women to stay in their houses as it is better for them, and the prophet salallahu alleyhi wa salam has said we may leave the house for nessecity, and the prophet salallahu allayhi wa salam has told us we cannot travel without a mahram, and crossing the boudaries of ones city is classed as travel. For example, france is only 15 miles away from where i live, and less than a one hour journey, so by that ruling i could travel to another country alone which obvously is not safe,i will be in a strange place with no protection. so it is my understanding that we abide by the rulings and evidence of Allah and his messenger salallahu allayhi wa salam. Allahu alam.
