View Full Version : Repentance
Asalaamu alaykum warahmatullah
I just came across some amazing hadith and ayat regarding repentance I thought Id share with you. They are always so heartening, and really make you wonder that Allah (swt)'s Mercy is beyond our comprehension.
Subhanallah, we have a Lord (swt) that is indeed Al-Wadood to His slaves.
Its only a couple, feel free to add more, inshallah as you know or come across them.
Narrated from Abu Hurayrah (rdn) that Rasool (saw) said: “A person committed a sin and said, ‘O Lord, I have sinned; forgive me.’ His Lord said: ‘Does My slave know that he has a Lord Who forgives sin and punishes for it? I have forgiven My slave.’ Then as much time as Allaah willed passed, and he committed sin again. He said, ‘O Lord, I have sinned; forgive me.’ His Lord said: ‘Does My slave know that he has a Lord Who forgives sin and punishes for it? I have forgiven My slave.’ …” (Bukhaari & Muslim)
"O you who believe! Turn to Allaah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will expiate from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise) the Day that Allaah will not disgrace the Prophet (Muhammad) and those who believe with him........."
(Al Tahreem: 8)
Narrated from Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari (rdn) that the Prophet (saw) said: “Allaah spreads out His hand at night to accept the repentance of those who committed sin during the day, and He spreads out His hand during the day to accept the repentance of those who committed sin during the night (and this will continue) until the sun rises from the west....” (Muslim)

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
A man sinned greatly against himself, and when death came to him he charged his sons, saying: When I have died, burn me, then crush me and scatter [my ashes] into the sea, for, by Allah, if my Lord takes possession of me, He will punish me in a manner in which He has punished no one [else]. So they did that to him. Then He said to the earth: Produce what you have taken-and there he was! And He said to him: What induced you to do what you did? He said: Being afraid of You, O my Lord (or he said: Being frightened of You) and because of that He forgave him.
It was related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah).
On the authority of Anas, who said:
I heard the messenger of Allah say:
Allah the Almighty has said: "O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as its."
[related by Al-Tirmithi, who said that it was a good and sound Hadith].
Allahu akbar.
I love this one, its a cornerstone to repetance >
Ibn Masood (ra) said: The believer regards his sin as if he were sitting beneath a mountain which he fears may fall on him, whereas the sinner regards his sin as if a fly lands on his nose and he swipes it away.
[Bukhari]
Subhanallah! Beautiful. Ive never heard that one before, Jazakullah khayr :)

The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam, said: "The master of invocations for forgiveness is that the servant says:
'Allăhumma 'anta rabbee, lă 'ilăha 'illă 'anta, khalaqtanee, wa 'ană `abduka, wa 'ană `ală `ahdika wa wa`dika mastata`tu, 'a`outhu bika min sharri ma sana`tu, 'aboo'u laka bini`matika 'alayya, wa 'aboo'u bithambee, faghfirlee fa'innahu lă yaghfiru 'aththunooba 'illă 'anta.
O' my 'ilăh You are my Lord, there is no 'ilăh but You. You created me, and I am your bondservant, and I will stick to my covenant and promise [of faith and sincere obedience] to You, as to my ability. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done, I acknowledge, to You, your bounties upon me, and I acknowledge, to You, my sin. Thus forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.
Whoever says this as he enters upon evening, then, dies that night, he would enter Paradise; and if one says this as he enters upon morning, then, dies that day, he would enter Paradise". [Al-Bukhari]

this isn't a hadith or ayah,
but its still a beautiful piece by imam as-Shafi
-----
Al-Muzni who is Aboo lbraaheem Isma`eel ibn Yahya said:
"I entered upon ash-Shaafi'ee during his illness which resulted in his death, so I said to him: 'What is your condition?' He replied: "I am journeying from this world, and departing from my brothers, drinking from the cup of death, and upon Allaah - Exalted is His remembrance - arriving. And no! By Allaah, I do not know if my soul is travelling towards Paradise or the Fire!" Then he started to weep, and he said:
'In You, the Creator, I raise my longing, And even if I am, O possessor of kindness and generosity, an evildoer, a criminal,
When my heart became constricted and my paths became narrow,
I took my hope in Your pardon and forgiveness as an opening and an escape,
My sins seemed very great to me but when I compared them to Your forgiveness,
I found Your forgiveness to be greater,
You are and still remain the only One who can forgive sins,
You grant and forgive out of Your benevolence and generosity,
Perhaps the One who is the source of all goodness will forgive and overlook my mistakes,
And will hide the sins and burden that I accumulated,
My sins seemed very great to me, so I turned (to You) in humility,
Were it not for my contentment in you, I wouldn't, O my Lord, have seen any comfort at all,
So if You forgive me, You would have forgiven a sinner, A rebellious, oppressive tyrant still sinning,
So my crime is very great, past and present, But Your forgiveness that embraces Your servant is greater and higher,
So whomsoever holds fast to Allaah is truly saved from mankind, And whomsoever's hopes are in Him, will be far removed from any regrets.'
In translating these lines of poetry I have exercised a certain degree of freedom in order to preserve the emotive content as well as making it readable in the English language. [Translator Note]

A Famous aunty ji on MM once said:
Ibn al-Qayyim wrote in one of his books:
"If you were to see a repenting person, you would see weary eyelids early in the morning asking for forgiveness and listening to Allaah's command: 'Repent to Allaah with a sincere repentance'. You would see that his diet is light and his grief heavy; his body weakened by fasting and his feet tired from prayers. He would be exausted both physically and spiritually"
Today, we think a simple du'a will do the job and even one drop of tear along with that du'a is something very rare nowadays

If we look into the new and old testaments too, we find an amazing array of instances where God has forgiven sins. Consider the exodus of the children of Israel just for one example.
The main thing is that we are repentent though. Without that, we cannot expect God to forgive us our sins. And just as he forgives us, so we must forgive others who we consider to have wronged us.
'O you who believe! Turn to Allaah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will expiate from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow. The Day that Allaah will not disgrace the Prophet (Muhammad) and those who believe with him. Their Light will run forward before them and (with their Records Books of deeds) in their right hands. They will say:
‘Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us [and do not put it off till we cross over the Siraat (a slippery bridge over Hell) safely] and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are Able to do all things'...

the most beautiful thread on whole of Ummah.com that i have come across
I love this hadith. the Mercy of Allah (swt).
Every single time I read it, always makes me smile.
Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: Verily the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: The last to enter Paradise would be a man who would walk once, stumble once and be burnt by the Fire once. Then when he passes beyond it, he will turn to it and say: Blessed is He Who has saved me from thee. Allah has given me something He has not given to any one of those in earlier or later times.
Then a tree would be raised for him and he will say: O my Lord! Bring me near this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Allah, the Exalted and Great, would say: O son of Adam, if I grant you this, you will ask Me for something else. He would say: No, my Lord. And he would promise Him that he would not ask for anything else. His Lord would excuse him because He sees what he cannot help desiring; so He would bring him bear it, and he would take shelter in its shade and drink of its water.
Afterwards a tree more beautiful than the first would be raised before him and he would say: O my Lord! Bring me near this tree in order that I may drink of its water and take shelter in its shade and I shall not ask Thee for anything else. He (Allah) would say: O son of Adam, if I bring you near it you may ask me for something else. He would promise Him that he would not ask for anything else. His Lord will excuse him because He sees something he cannot help desiring. So He would bring him near it and he would enjoy its shade and drink its water.
Then a tree would be raised for him at the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the first two. He would say: O my Lord! Bring me near this (tree) so that I may enjoy its shade and drink from its water. I shall not ask Thee for anything else. He (Allah) would say: O son of Adam! Did you not promise Me that you would not ask Me for anything else? He would say: Yes my Lord, but I shall not ask Thee for anything else. His Lord would excuse him for He sees something the temptation of which he could not resist.
He (Allah) would bring him near it, and when He brings him near it he would hear the voices of the inhabitants of the Paradise. He would say: O my Lord! Admit me to it. He (Allah) would say: O son of Adam, what will bring an end to your requests to Me? Will it please you if I give you the whole world and a similar one with it? He will say: O my Lord! Art Thou mocking at me, though Thou art the Lord of the worlds?
Ibn Mas'ud laughed and asked (the hearers): Why don't you ask me what I am laughing at. They (then) said: Why do you laugh? He said: It is in this way that the Messenger of Allah (saw) laughed. They (the companions of the Holy Prophet) asked: Why do you laugh, Messenger of Allah? He said: On account of the laugh of the Lord of the universe, when he (the desirer of Paradise) said: Art Thou mocking at me though Thou art the Lord of the worlds? He would say: I am not mocking at you, but I have the power to do whatever I wish.
[Sahih Muslim, Vol. 1, #359, 361]
Allahu akbar.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (rdn), who said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:
When Allah decreed the Creation He pledged Himself by writing in His book which is laid down with Him,
‘My mercy prevails over my wrath’
(Muslim, Bukhari, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah).

I love this story. But I've got few questions about it.
1.what was the name of the man?
2. Why did he meat/hear Allah(swt)? I thought we only do that at the day of judgment.
3. How did this story became known? I mean how did we, people on earth, hear about this? by the prophet(pbuh) through the angles?
