Assalamua Alaikum:

Can someone tell me who this man (ra) was? From what I've read in Bukhari, he (prior to Rasoolullah (s) receiving the Divine Message) claimed he was from 'Milati Ibraheem', denounced the worshipping of idols, did not eat meat that was slaughtered in their name, and saved new-born girls from being buried alive.

Did he knew Rasoolullah (s)? If so, what was their relationship like? Did he live to see the Prophethood?

Asalam alaikum,

As far as i'm aware he was a haneef, he was disgusted upon what the qur'aish had done, because of this he was abused by them, especially by his uncle Al-Khattab. He therefore travelled to find the true religion of Ibraheem (as), he met jewish rabbis and christian scholars but was unsatisfied with their religion. He question a monk and the monk replied in return saying that the religion he was seeking did not exist, however he also said that the time was now near that God would send would send forth from his own people, a prophet who would restore the religion of Ibraheem.
Zayd retrayed his footsteps and headed to makkah seeking the phrophet, but he died before he could do so.

It has been said, although no soruce is given, that Naby (saaws) said,"he will be raised as having, in himself alone, the worth of a whole people".

He had a son called Said (ra) who became a great companion.

Allaah knows best.
May Allaah be please with the companions and zayd ibn amr, and peace and blessings of Allah be upon the prophet.

Wasalaam.

salam alaykum,

his story is written in suwar min hayat alsahabah by Dr.Abdelrahman Ra'fat Basha, but I don't know if you have come in contact with the Dr's book? May Allah's mercy be upon him, his intention was in trying to bring the prophet's companions close to the reader, so he writes in story form, and in the end he writes that he gets the info from places including sifatulsafwa and usdu alghabah etc only he doesnt say exactly where.

Anyway, here's a translation of what he wrote in summary:

That his name is zayd Ibn Amr Ibn Nufail and his paternal uncle was Alkhattab(omar's father). He did not like the way the meccan's worshipped and he once objected loudly infront of everyone on the way they sacrificed animals in the names of idols, this made the meccan kaffirs very angry and they ran him out of Mecca until he reached the mount of hiraa, and he could only enter after that Mecca at night and in secret. He used to meet with four people they were :

waraqa ibn nufal
Abdullah ibn Jahsh
Uthman ibn ALharith
and Omayma bint Abdelmutalib(the aunt of Sayedna Mohamed saaws)

Anyway they agreed to search for the right religion amongst the jews and christians and the four men went to the jews and christians, only waraqa became a christian but the other three men remained as they were.

Zayd says that he thought much about the two religions but he felt somehow that wasn't the religion he wishd to embrace, something about them was different from that religion that was brought down on Sayedna Ibrahim saaws, so he took himself off to the shaam(that's syria, lebanon, jordan and palestine) and there he met with a priest and he told him what he wanted, and the priest asked him: Are you then seeking the religion of Ibrahim? and Zaid said : Yes, where do I go to learn?

The priest answered him: This religion is no more now,but God will send a man who will renew the religion of Ibrahim so if you ever meet him, then follow him.

So Zayd set off back to Mecca and before he reached it some highwaymen/bandits attacked him and killed him, his last breath he said: Oh Allah I have been prevented from the goodness, do not keep it away from my son Saeed

Sure enough Saeed Ibn ZAyd and his wife Fatima bint ALkhattab were amongst the first to enter Islam and SAeed met much hardship for his religion.
=============

That's all it says about Zayd, though the story of Saeed is very nice
