Milan, 1 Nov. (AKI) - The first web site dedicated to Italian converts to Islam has been launched on the Internet. The creator of the portal - www.huda.it - is a Syrian Muslim, Emad Wafa, who lives in Milan. "Five months after arriving in Italy, I tried to set up a free site to present Islam to Italian colleagues who work with me," Wafa told Adnkronos International (AKI). "In that site I only posted verses from the Koran but for my activity of Dawa [an invitation or missionary work in Arabic] I had difficulty finding Italian books on Islam, so this is why I have now founded a second site" he added.

"During recent months I have got to know many Italians who have converted to Islam and I think that it is useful for everyone to know their stories," Wafa told AKI. "The most important section of the site is dedicated to those Italians who have converted to Islam."

The huda.it portal also contains many articles, links and book suggestions on Islamic doctrine, most of them written by Italian converts, as well as interviews with other famous non Italian converts, such as Jermaine Jackson, brother of pop idol Michael Jackson, or Cat Stevens, the former pop star, who took the name Yusuf Islam when he converted to Islam at the peak of his career.

Thanks largely to immigration over the past two decades, Islam is now Italy's second-largest religion after Roman Catholicism, with the number of Muslims estimated at between 700,000 and one million among a total population of 58 million.
